Arts Society

The goal of The Arts Society of the Norris Cultural Arts Center is to bring together active and interested persons of the community and to improve awareness and participation in programs at The Norris.

It is a network of volunteers who participate at each of the Norris events by ushering, working Curtain Calls (refreshments during intermission), and as Backstage Moms (attending to the needs of the performers and crew).

If you are interest in being an usher, working "Curtain Call" or being a "Backstage Mom/Dad" please call 630.584-7200 Ext. 14.

The Arts Society also puts on an annual Christmas event, "Tea Time on Stage," which is usually held in December. There will be no "tea" in 2010.  Check again for 2011.  The Arts Society volunteers are entirely responsible for changing the stage into a magical winter wonderland for the entertainment pleasure of our community's young folks. Mrs. Claus sings and talks to all the children, Grandma storyteller sits in her rocker on stage and tells the children a wonderful story, and our very own Careful Critters -- Polar Bear, Lion, and Monkey -- also appear to the joy and delight of all the children. Santa tea and special Santa sandwiches, cookies, and homemade, chocolate German candy is all laboriously prepared and served by our members.

After the 45-minute onstage theatrics and tea, the children are escorted into the lobby for a picture with Mrs. Claus and a Careful Critter of their choice. Before they leave, each child receives a special, beautifully wrapped goody bag filled with our very own homemade "teddy bear" Rice Krispie treat, along with a special handmade ornament.

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please call 630-.584.7200 ext. 14.

The Art Society was organized in September, 1982, by a group of five women under the direction of Joann Collins, daughter of Dellora Norris.  It was formed as an auxiliary to the center and was originally called the Women's Board of the NCAC.   In 1990, they voted to change the name to The Arts Society of the Norris Cultural Arts Center.

Fundraising has been an important part of The Arts Society from the beginning, and has included fashion shows, a Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert, The Enchanted Forest, The Careful Critters' Show, Tea time on Stage, pecan sales, and Curtain Calls Cookbook.  Since 1994, The Arts Society has generated more than $125,000 to support programming and beautification projects at The Norris.
