LOYOLA GRAD STUDENT KATIE LORENZ CROWNED MISS ILLINOIS 2008

Lorenz, 24, will now spend the next year touring the state of Illinois speaking at schools, public events, and charitable functions about CHARACTER COUNTS! and Right Decisions, Right Now as well as her personal community service platform of promoting volunteerism.

She will also compete with 51 other titleholders from across the United States for the title of Miss America at the 2009 Miss America Pageant, which will be held next January at Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On the same evening, Emily Travis of Metropolis was crowned Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen 2008 by outgoing Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen MerrieBeth Cox of Roselle. Travis will now prepare to compete in the Miss America's Outstanding Teen Pageant in mid-August in Orlando, Florida.

For her talent, Lorenz performed a lyrical dance to 'Footprints in the Sand' by Leona Lewis. She previously performed with the Plymouth Ballet Company in The Plymouth Symphony's production of "Nutcracker".

The Top 5 consisted of Lorenz, 1st Runner-Up Miss Macomb Alycia McCullough of Cochranton, PA, 2nd Runner-Up Miss Greater Lakes Erin Madden of Greenwood, IN, 3rd Runner-Up Miss Lakeshore Chelsea Fahey of Orland Park and 4th Runner-Up Miss North Shore Area Jennifer Rose of Marion.

A graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in English, Lorenz is a graduate student at Loyola University in Chicago who will now take a year off from her studies to tour the state as Miss Illinois 2008.

The Miss Illinois Scholarship Association is a preliminary pageant to the Miss America Pageant. The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the M.A.O. and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance!
